Back in 1892, a fellow named Evan Pell purchased the land where this restaurant now sits for $27. He built the unique mountain structure himself and ran it as a general store, allowing farmers on their way to the market in Asheville to stop and water their livestock in the small creek that still borders the property. In the years after that, the building was used as a school, a post office, a tack shop, and a private dwelling for such characters as Uncle Bubba Bryson, Wimp Davis, and others. In 1971, the Purple Onion Shoppe was opened by Ske Dick as an outdoor deli-style restaurant. Eight years later, Scott and Brien Peterkin purchased the property and formed the Cornucopia Restaurant. Around 2015 or thereabouts, the torch was passed to the King family, who have embraced the restaurant’s legacy with open arms and even heartier appetites. They’ve infused the menu with their own special touch, ensuring The Corn (as locals lovingly call it) continues to dish up deliciousness and laughter for generations to come, earning its reputation as “Cashiers’ Favorite Porch.”
